Investing your taxes responsibly

Ottawa must make it a priority to properly maintain and invest in our capital infrastructure, but when it comes to infrastructure spending, our city has a tendency for being cheap and getting poor value for money. This short-sighted approach often costs more in the end. The LRT fiasco is a prime example of why we need a new procurement system that doesn’t always prioritize the lowest bidder over other considerations that may provide greater value over the long-term.

We also need greater fiscal rigor and better public consultation when it comes to massive infrastructure decisions that will contribute to our city's escalating debt. Whether it’s the LRT, the new Civic Hospital, or Lansdowne 2.0, it’s hard to know if our taxes are being spent responsibly when decisions take place behind closed doors. Our City Council should always prioritize transparency.
